Toshiya Iwasaki, who was born to the same family as the founder of the entire Mitsubishi group, graduated from London University with a degree in applied chemistry in 1903. At that time, no Japanese company had succeeded in producing flat glass for windows, although many had tried. Iwasaki committed himself to the task, reportedly not using the Mitsubishi name in case his failure might bring dishonor to it.
